(NewsReady.com) – New York City has been fighting a rise in crime for weeks now. The city had 125 shootings in the first 3 weeks of June, and on the 4th of July weekend, there were close to 40. On July 11, the Big Apple saw 15 acts of gun violence in 15 hours. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) thinks she knows the reason people are committing criminal acts.
During a virtual town hall on July 9, she was asked about the rise of crime. The congresswoman said it’s happening because people feel like they need to shoplift bread to feed their families. AOC blamed it on increased unemployment.
AOC on increased NYC crime: "Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren't paying their rent & are scared to pay their rent & so they go out & they need to feed their child & they don't have money so… they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry." pic.twitter.com/oHSTWWJZ6a

To be clear, the increase in shootings isn’t from people shoplifting. In fact, if people are stealing bread to feed their kids, that requires a large backpack, not a gun. If that person is using a firearm, they’ve committed armed robbery, not petty theft.
Is crime related to poverty? Sure, that can be a factor. But there’s no evidence the uptick in shootings in NYC is related to poverty. Remember though, this is coming from the woman who wants to literally defund the NYPD — while there is a rise in gun violence.
