Biden Stops Just Short Of Canceling Student Loans As Pressure Mounts

(NewsReady.com) – Progressives are increasing pressure on President Joe Biden to cancel student loan debt. Although the POTUS has not taken steps to wipe it all out, he did extend the freeze on loan repayments again, a move many of his allies say simply isn’t enough.

On April 6, Biden announced he was extending the freeze on federal student loan repayments through August 31, 2022. That means people won’t have to start paying their loans until September at the earliest. The previous deadline was May 1. Vice President Kamala Harris spoke about the repayment freeze in a White House statement, saying it “will make a meaningful difference” to people as they move forward.

According to Newsweek, the latest decision came after House Democrats pressured him. They reportedly told the president if he didn’t give Americans more time, they would likely default on their loans. Lawmakers also pointed to rising inflation as a reason to extend the freeze.

Not everyone was satisfied with Biden’s decision. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) simply tweeted, “Cancel student debt. All of it.” In a similar fashion, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed the extensions and said the debts should just be canceled.
