(NewsReady.com) – The results from the Democratic Party’s Iowa Caucus have finally been revealed and they’ve delivered another shock to the beleaguered party. Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, took a surprise lead, gaining 14 of the state’s delegates.
Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) came in second place with 12, despite his supporters having claimed victory based on his lead in the popular vote.
The Iowa results have been plagued by controversy and irregularities since the vote. The Iowa Democratic Party says they’ve made corrections in 55 of the 95 precincts they’ve reviewed; errors include giving all Sanders’ votes in central Iowa to Deval Patrick, apparently because a staffer made a mistake with a spreadsheet.
The Sanders campaign is now calling for a recanvass in 25 precincts where they say irregularities counted against their candidate.
