China’s First Costco Store Induces Insanity

China's First Costco Store Induces Insanity
  • Store forced to close early due to mobs.
  • Thousands rushed to grab anything and everything.
  • Popular items included fresh meat, rotisserie chickens and giant teddy bears.
  • 97-degree temps outside store where shoppers waited to enter.

Costco opened its first store in Shanghai recently, and the scene was complete chaos.

Video taken at the store shows people crawling under the rolling door as it was being raised up, and a level of shoving and pushing that typically only takes place in American stores on Black Friday.

Customers, who paid the equivalent of $28 American dollars for an annual membership, fought over everything from designer clothing to pieces of meat. The lines for parking and checking out were hours long.

The behavior of the excited patrons got so bad that the police had to be called in. Shortly after opening, the store sent messages to Costco members asking them to avoid the store during peak hours. When it appeared that the message was being ignored Costco decided to close at around 2 p.m. to avoid any further problems.

The following day Costco limited the number of people allowed in the store to 2,000 at a time.
