New Legal Troubles for Tommy Robinson
Tommy Robinson, the controversial British activist whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is once again in the crosshairs of the UK legal system. The Attorney General’s Office has lodged a new contempt of court application against Robinson, alleging he breached a High Court injunction from 2021 through six separate actions between June and July of this year.
The injunction in question followed Robinson’s loss in a libel case against Jamal Hijazi, a Syrian refugee. Robinson was ordered to pay Hijazi £100,000 in damages and legal costs, and was barred from repeating the false allegations that led to the lawsuit.
Alleged Breaches and Legal Action
The Solicitor General, Sarah Sackman, served Robinson with the latest contempt application on his X account on Wednesday, after it was filed on August 19. This move follows an earlier contempt application concerning other alleged breaches, which came to light during a court hearing in London last month.
Robinson is accused of repeating the banned allegations in three interviews between February and June 2023. Additionally, the film “Silenced” was reportedly shown again at a demonstration in Trafalgar Square in July, contributing to the alleged breach.
Robinson’s Departure and Arrest Warrant
Following his release on unconditional bail, Robinson reportedly left the country. This led Mr Justice Johnson to issue a warrant for Robinson’s arrest. However, the execution of the warrant has been delayed until early October, allowing Robinson the opportunity to attend the next hearing voluntarily or apply to set aside the warrant.
A hearing for both contempt applications is now scheduled for October 28, where Robinson’s fate will be determined. If found guilty of contempt, he could face imprisonment.
Implications for Free Speech
This case once again brings to the forefront the ongoing debate about the balance between free speech and judicial integrity in the UK. Robinson’s supporters argue that his right to free expression is being infringed upon, while critics maintain that court orders must be respected to ensure the proper functioning of the justice system.
As this legal saga unfolds, it will undoubtedly continue to attract significant attention, raising questions about the role of activism and media influence in shaping public perceptions and impacting court outcomes in the United Kingdom.
