Cornel West Is Running for President

(NewsReady.com) – Dr. Cornel West, Ph.D., known to many as “Brother West,” is a philosopher, political activist, author, and a Professor Emeritus at Princeton University and the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Chair at Union Theological Seminary. His academic practice covers topics like African American critical thought, the philosophy of religion, cultural theory, politics, and literature. He also stresses the need to promote and preserve Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. A self-proclaimed socialist, West recently announced his decision to run for President of the United States in 2024.

On June 5, West posted a short video on his Twitter page announcing his decision to run for “truth and justice” as a candidate for the People’s Party nomination. The People’s Party is a progressive political organization, and West’s announcement fell in lockstep with that ideology. He vowed to promote lofty leftist goals like ending mass incarcerations and wars, staving off the “ecological collapse,” and ending poverty. He also promised to guarantee “housing, healthcare, education, and living wages for all.”

West characterized the upcoming campaign cycle as a “quest.” According to him, assuming the role of president is merely one of many “vehicle[s] to pursue … truth and justice,” something West says he’s been striving to do his entire life.

West joins a growing field of presidential hopefuls. While President Joe Biden isn’t facing any significant challenges to his party’s nomination (despite his atrocious polling figures), the same can’t be said for the leader of the Republican pack, former President Donald Trump.

Corey Stapleton, Montana’s former Secretary of State, led the pack by announcing his candidacy on November 11, followed by Trump four days later. Former UN ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley tossed her hat in the ring in February, followed by conservative talk radio host Larry Elder and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson in April.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced his highly-anticipated presidential bid on May 24, followed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on June 6.

Although West remains a long-shot candidate (or perhaps a non-shot one), his announced clip received more than 17 million views within 24 hours.
