Doctor Guilty – $30 Million Fraud!!
(NewsReady.com) – At the beginning of the opioid crisis, pill mills were all over the country. Those were doctor offices where physicians would write unnecessary prescriptions for painkillers. A federal jury has now convicted a Michigan doctor who ran one of the clinics.
According to a press release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, a jury convicted 62-year-old David Jankowski on 30 charges. The Bingham Farms doctor was found guilty of crimes related to the illegal distribution of controlled substances and fraud.

Prosecutors alleged Jankowski operated the Summit Medical Group and wrote unnecessary prescriptions for morphine, Xanax, Oxycontin, and drugs. He or his staff authorized charging insurance companies for 1.7 million Schedule II, 800,000 Schedule III, and 870,000 Schedule IV controlled substances when there was no medical need for them. The doctor received over $6 million from Medicaid and Medicare and $29.3 million from private and auto insurance.
United States Attorney Dawn N. Ison said her office is aggressively trying to stop the flow of opioids. Further, law enforcement is “investigating health care fraud” carried out by shady doctors. Her office hopes to deter other doctors from “illegally distributing controlled substances and stealing taxpayer funds.”
The opioid crisis has caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in the US over the last two decades.
