(NewsReady.com) – ProPublica won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the Supreme Court, that began in 2023 with an article about Justice Clarence Thomas. The justice had received gifts and luxury trips worth millions from a billionaire businessman. Fix The Court tallied all of the gifts he received during his time as a justice on the high court, and the total topped $4 million. Fox News recently tried to equate his actions to those of the newest justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Justice Jackson’s financial disclosures recently became public. The associate justice reported receiving tickets from Beyoncé in 2023 to attend her Renaissance tour. The tickets were worth approximately $4,000.
Fox News reported on Jackson’s disclosures on the June 6 episode of “America Reports” with John Roberts and Sandra Smith. Roberts mentioned that Thomas recently amended his 2023 financial disclosure form to include the luxury trips he took in 2019. They didn’t mention how much the trips cost but transitioned into the story about Jackson receiving concert tickets.
On the same day, Rich Edson was filling in for Bret Baier on “Special Report with Bret Baier” when he brought up the issue. He also mentioned Thomas amended his filing and said Beyoncé gave Jackson tickets.
Both episodes aired the same day the Fix the Court report was published, but neither mentioned that Thomas was the recipient of the most gifts given to any of the justices. According to the report, from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2023, Thomas accepted 193 gifts, totaling $4,042,286. The report estimated that the real number is actually much higher.
That was far and above the amount accepted by the justice who received the second-highest amount of gifts, Justice Samuel Alito. He accepted 16 gifts totaling $170,095.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh accepted the lowest number of gifts. He has only disclosed taking one and said it was worth about $100. Justice Amy Coney Barrett is behind him with three gifts with a total value of approximately $500.
