GOP Lawmakers Slam Pelosi’s Decision to Keep Congress Home

(NewsReady.com) – When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) began allowing proxy voting. That’s a process where one member of Congress votes for another member. Republicans pushed back against the procedure, suing Pelosi, but their case was eventually dismissed. Now that the country is starting to get back to normal, the GOP is asking that Congress does as well.

On Tuesday, May 18, House Republicans sent a letter to Pelosi “cease all proxy voting” for the remainder of the session. The lawmakers said 75% of Congress has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the CDC has said that fully vaccinated people do not have to wear a mask or socially distance while indoors. There’s no longer a reason to vote by proxy.

The GOP lawmakers want Congress to “lead by example.” If the American people have to start going back to their normal work routine, so should their representatives. Continuing to hold a vote by proxy is leading to unnecessary delays and the people of this country deserve better.
