House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) is, arguably, the origin of the impeachment movement against Trump. He had contact with the whistleblower, was privy to the accusation of wrong-doing before most others and made a case out of the resulting whistleblower complaint. Schiff plays an essential role in this impeachment inquiry.
However, not everyone in Congress accepts this scenario. In particular, Republicans want Schiff to testify to reveal exactly how and when he received information and what that information entailed. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) made that sentiment clear during this week’s impeachment inquiry.
“We want Schiff in the chair! Not you!”
Gaetz directed his statement towards Democratic Intelligence Counsel Dan Goldman during questioning from Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA). He interrupted the testimony to demand that Schiff be present and accountable for a crucial moment in the impeachment process.
Although many Republicans have specifically called for Schiff to testify before Congress, Gaetz made it a point to vocalize his party’s point during proceedings so that it’s documented for the American people. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), House Judiciary Committee Chairman, reprimanded Gaetz for the outburst, but not without opposition from Collins, who asked Goldman “Where’s Adam? Where’s Adam? It’s his report.”
