(NewsReady.com) – On April 7, the Senate confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS). Democrats celebrated the confirmation with a party at the White House. However, not everyone was happy.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki spoke about Jackson’s confirmation to Fox News Sunday on April 10. She described the atmosphere at the White House as one of celebration and described people as “ugly-crying” on the South Lawn. The enthusiasm was in part due to the historic nature of Jackson’s confirmation; the judge will become the first black woman to sit on the high court when she replaces Associate Justice Stephen Breyer next term.
Not everyone is pleased with the soon-to-be associate justice’s confirmation, though. Republicans largely stood against her nomination with only three GOP senators voting for her. Many Conservatives objected to her past work as a judge, particularly what they believe was her handing down a light sentence for someone convicted of possessing child pornography.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Biden will need to pick judges who are more moderate if he has an opportunity to pick another Supreme Court justice if the GOP takes back the upper chamber. The senator once kept a SCOTUS seat open for almost a year to prevent former President Barack Obama from filling the seat with now-Attorney General Merrick Garland.
What are your thoughts on Judge Jackson? Do you support her confirmation?
