(NewsReady.com) – Following concerns that Democrats are planning to drag out President Trump’s impeachment trial into a weeks-long circus, Republican senators are working on a rule that would leave room for a rapid dismissal if the process turns into political theater. Ironically, several senior Democrats also have an interest in seeing the trial concluded quickly.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) warned Sunday that if the Senate decides to hear from multiple witnesses, the trial could run for at least six to eight weeks, and perhaps even longer. That would be bad news for those Democrat senators who’re vying for their party’s presidential nomination. A long trial would take them off the campaign trail and let their rivals build up valuable early momentum.
No details of the Republican plan have been released yet. However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is believed to be close to finalizing a resolution. Senior colleagues say that, as of a few days ago, it included an option for the president’s defense team to move to judgment or dismissal if the trial seems to be dragging on.
