While Democrats control the House, not all of them see eye-to-eye in regards to impeaching Trump. However, that trend is changing. Some Democrats who have been on the fence are throwing their support behind the impeachment movement.
They take this action in spite of making their seats more vulnerable in the upcoming 2020 elections. There are 31 districts that are currently controlled by Democrats, but not before Trump initially won them during his 2016 presidential race. At least 17 of those districts are supporting the impeachment process.
Many of the representatives from those districts fear that this decision will turn them into one-term seat holders. For instance, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) stated:
“I’ve been told more times than I can count that the vote I’ll be casting this week will mark the end of my short political career. That may be.”
Rep. Joe Cunningham (D-SC) also shared his thoughts. He said:
“If I wanted to do what was easy politically, I would just vote ‘no’ and move on.”
These potential one-term Democrats could make it all but certain that the upcoming impeachment vote will move to the Senate.
