(NewsReady.com) – Americans are fascinated by organized crime. There are dozens of television shows, documentaries, and movies about the mob and cartels. In recent years, Netflix has invested millions into shows like “Narcos,” and now it has a new drama coming out starring Sofía Vergara. It’s already getting negative attention.
Sofía Vergara, known for her role on “Modern Family,” is now starring as the drug lord Griselda Blanco Restrepo in a new Netflix short series called “Griselda.” The show was released on Netflix on January 25. However, Blanco’s children filed a lawsuit against the streaming service and Vergara ahead of the show’s release to try to stop it.
Entertainment Tonight obtained a copy of the lawsuit. According to Blanco’s son, Michael Blanco, he’d been providing interviews to people since 2009 who said they were interested in developing his and his mother’s life stories into a show or a book. He interviewed with people up until 2022, he claimed in the lawsuit, and those individuals promised they’d been shopping the story around since 2016.
Michael went on to say that Netflix was one of the companies that expressed interest but claimed it didn’t want his interviews. He now says the content of the new show actually relied heavily on those interviews and the anecdotes he shared, and the company did not pay him. Michael and his siblings argue Netflix used their likenesses in the series without their permission, as well as the interview material.
In September, attorney Elysa Galloway and Michael’s wife, Marie, issued a statement on social media distancing the family from the show. They said neither Michael nor anyone else in the family was consulted or took part in its production.
Michael starred in a television show called “Cartel Crew,” which followed the lives of the children of cartel bosses.
Who Was the Godmother of Cocaine?
Blanco was one of the most notorious drug lords in history. She was born in Colombia and dominated the cocaine trade in the 1970s and 1980s. In fact, she became known as the “Black Widow” and the “Godmother of Cocaine.” She was known for being completely ruthless, and her cartel, which was based in Miami, inundated the US with the addictive drug.
Blanco was known for being so violent that Pablo Escobar allegedly once said, “The only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco.”
Blanco was murdered in 2012 while walking out of a butcher shop in Medellín, Colombia, with her pregnant daughter-in-law.
