(NewsReady.com) – President Joe Biden implemented a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, meaning no American lawmaker would attend. Republicans wanted an outright boycott of the games, prohibiting athletes from attending, too. Recent warnings from Pelosi demonstrate why the Right felt that way.
On Thursday, February 3, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spoke during the Congressional-Executive Commission on China about the human rights abuses. She addressed the American athletes who are competing in the Olympics, telling them not to risk angering the “ruthless” Chinese government. The congresswoman went on to say she knows some might be tempted to speak out against the abuses happening in the communist country. However, the speaker said she’s worried “about what the Chinese government might do to their reputations, to their families.”
The FBI also issued a warning to athletes to leave their personal phones at home. The agency said the Chinese government or other bad actors might launch cyberattacks by hacking them. It also recommended the athletes buy burner phones to use while overseas.
The warnings by Pelosi and the FBI highlight how dangerous China is, which raises the question: Why are American athletes there at all if the US government is so worried?
