Pelosi Wants To Curb Presidential War Powers

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Sunday night that she plans to introduce a War Powers Resolution to limit the president’s freedom to use the US military against Iran. Many Democrats, including Pelosi, have criticized last Friday’s strike against an Iranian paramilitary commander; now they want to try to stop it from happening again.

Pelosi says the new War Powers Resolution will “reassert” Congress’s powers under the original 1973 version. Under the Resolution, if Congress doesn’t take any action to approve further military operations, the president’s authority to use armed force lapses in 30 days.

So far the administration’s actions have been legal under the 1973 law. The White House formally notified Congress of the strike on General Qasem Soleimani on Saturday, well within the 48-hour window for doing this.
