Police Make Arrest After Fox News Christmas Tree Burned

(NewsReady.com) – An arsonist destroyed the Fox Square Christmas tree recently. Now, a suspect is in custody and Fox News is promising a new tree will go up soon.

Just after midnight on Wednesday, December 8, the New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to a fire. The 50-foot Fox News “All-American Christmas Tree” was in flames. Onlookers had seen a man climb up the metal structure that makes the tree and light papers on fire. Flames spread to other trees in the display before firefighters put it out.

After the man, now identified as 49-year-old Craig Tamanaha, allegedly climbed down, he stood on the street and watched the tree burn. Police saw the suspect running away from the scene when they arrived and arrested him. He’s facing multiple charges, including arson. The man, who has no home address, has a prior criminal record with drug and public intoxication charges.

The tree was decorated with more than 100,000 lights, 10,000 glass bulbs, and it was all in red, white, and blue. Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott reportedly sent out a company-wide email letting the news organization know what happened. She said there are plans to put up a new tree and will share the details when she has them.
