Pro-Iran Hackers Hit Government Website

US government website managers woke up to a seemingly harmless, though disturbing, webpage alteration recently.

The homepage of the US Federal Depository Library Program was hacked and had its contents altered briefly. A pro-Iran message filled the page with an image of President Trump bleeding and being punched in the face. The page was quickly taken down and secured after this discovery.

The bottom of the page read: “Hacked by Iran Cyber Security Group Hackers. This is only small part of Iran’s cyber ability! We’re always ready.”

Officials don’t believe that any crucial systems were broken into or data breached. Even if the website was subjected to more extensive probing, the hackers would have found little of value. The Federal Depository Library Program primarily provides the public with free governmental information including court opinions, bills, statues, and other non-sensitive federal information.

The “Iran Cyber Security Group” is an unknown group and an established connection between it and Iran hasn’t yet been made.
