Ron DeSantis Backs Business Owners and Grants Clemency
  • Florida has been used as an example of how the country could have handled COVID-19.
  • Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has had the state up and running normally for months.
  • The governor is thought to be a potential candidate for the 2024 presidential race.
  • DeSantis recently made a move to protect businesses in his state.

(NewsReady.com) – Florida is one of the few states in the US that has operated relatively normally throughout the pandemic. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) didn’t want his state to end up with a terrible economy and miserable residents. So, he made a decision early on to protect the freedoms of the people he represents, and he has continued to publicly do that.

Clemency for Businesses

Last summer, gym owners Mike and Jillian Carnevale were arrested multiple times for allowing people in their business without masks. The couple faced up to 120 days in jail because of it. On Wednesday, May 12, DeSantis announced he was granting clemency to the couple and any other business owner who was facing penalties for not following social distancing or mask mandates. The governor called the arrests a “total overreach,” and said a health advisory “should not be punitive.”

Ron DeSantis Pandemic Approach

Governor DeSantis implemented some restrictions at the beginning of the outbreak, but ended up opening up his state pretty quickly. Democrats and the media attacked him with gusto when he allowed his state to get back to “normal.” They accused him of making the Sunshine State a “test case for herd immunity.” Activists dubbed him “DeathSantis” and claimed he was trying to kill people in his state.

In March, the Sun-Sentinel reported that Florida’s death rate was actually below the national average a year into the pandemic. Its jobless rate was also lower than many other states with large populations. It looked like the governor’s approach to the pandemic worked for the people of Florida. Had more leaders taken his lead, the country might not have suffered the way it did.

His latest move just further proves that when push comes to shove, he puts the fundamental right of freedom before politics.
