Rumors Persist About Who Might Succeed Pope Francis

Look Who’s Going To Replace Pope Francis

(NewsReady.com) – Rumors have swirled about the possibility of Pope Francis retiring instead of holding the office of head of the Catholic Church until he dies. While experts have reportedly said the pontiff has no intention of leaving his post, the chatter persists. Bookies are now predicting who might replace him.

According to Newsweek, bookies are predicting Pope Francis’ replacement will be an Asian or black cardinal. Bookmaker Paddy Power has given Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle 6-to-1 odds of being chosen. British bookmakers OLBG have given him 5-to-1 odds. Pope Benedict XVI made Tagle a cardinal.

Tagle previously served as archbishop of Manila and is now known as the “Asian Francis.” In 2019, Pope Francis appointed him as leader of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, which heads the Catholic Church in Africa, Asia, and other territories.

Cardinal Peter Turkson, a black man, has also been given 6-to-1 odds by OLBG and 4-to-1 odds by Paddy Power. If elected, he would be the first African pope in 1,500 years.

European candidates who could be chosen are Italian Angelo Scola who was given 6-to-1 odds by OBLG. Austrian Christoph Schonborn was given odds of 8-to-1, Canadian Marc Ouelett with 7-to-1 odds, and American Raymond Leo Burke has 8-to-1 odds.

If Francis does retire, the cardinals will hold a meeting to pick his replacement. Black smoke will come from the Vatican if no pope has been chosen, and when the cardinals finally choose a new pope, the smoke will turn white.
