A well-known Russian spy ship, the RFN Viktor Leonov, was called out for acting “unsafely” off the US southeastern coast. Reports from commercial ships came in over the course of a few days indicating that something was amiss with the RFN Viktor Leonov’s behavior. Luckily, no hostile activity, damaged ships or injuries of any kind were reported.
As Captain Mark R. Vluan of the US Coast Guard put it, the ship wasn’t “energizing running lights while in reduced visibility conditions, not responding to hails by commercial vessels attempting to coordinate safe passage and other erratic movements.”
Officials believe that the RFN Viktor Leonov was headed back towards Russia during its last sighting. Previously, it was sailing around South Carolina, Georgia and Florida where there are a number of US military bases. The Russian ship’s mission is unknown, and its unsafe behavior raises questions regarding its intentions.
