The Russo-Ukraine war has led to drone innovation.
(NewsReady.com) – Drones have changed the face of the battle in Ukraine. The Russian military has deployed hundreds of its own and Iranian-made drones to attack its neighbor. The Ukrainian government has responded by pouring money and resources into the creation of drones. Now, Russia is reportedly developing a new tool to hunt down drone operators.
Cobra System
According to reports, Russia is developing a new system called “Cobra” to find drone operators. The system reportedly looks like a game console. Newsweek reported the system’s developer Stanislav, said it can track drone operators in Ukraine and pinpoint “their coordinates on a map in real time.”
The Cobra system is currently in the testing phase. When it’s finished, Russia will send the machines to the Ukrainian battlefields where they will be used for “experimental combat operation.” The Russian military hopes to mass produce the system.
Russia Deploys New Drones
Russia hasn’t just created a new system to hunt down drone operators, it’s also deploying cheap drones to find Ukraine’s air defense systems. Reuters reported two new types of drones were used in five attacks over the last three weeks.
One of the new drones has a Ukrainian mobile phone SIM card and camera attached that takes images of damage and the air defenses and then sends the images to the Russian military. Andriy Cherniak, a Ukrainian spy official, told the newspaper that the Russian drones identify where Ukraine’s “mobile groups are positioned” and then “where the machine guns are that can destroy” Russia’s military.
Cherniak said the new Russian drones don’t have explosives but appear like they do. The other type of drone is being used as a distraction. They either have no explosive charge or a small one. Because they look like traditional drones, Ukraine’s air defense system shoots them down, revealing the location of the system.
Drone Innovation
The war in Ukraine has led to a drone revolution with both sides heavily investing in the devices. The first-person view (FPV) drone has become one of the most deadly weapons in the nearly three-year conflict. They were originally used by civilians but are now being loaded with explosives and sent on missions to kill. The drones are also very cheap. They can cost as little as $500.
Tech gurus in Ukraine are developing other weapons using artificial intelligence (AI) as well. Start-up companies are currently developing semi-autonomous attack drones to use on the battlefield. Some have described the war as ushering in the era of killer robots.
