(NewsReady.com) – Many Americans are uncertain whether or not we’re going to war with Iran over the recent chaotic developments in the Middle East. To that end, a resolution to clarify the current situation was introduced into the Senate by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). The resolution states that the 2001 and 2002 authorizations for military force (AUMF) don’t apply to a potential war with Iran.
The full statement can be read here.
Merkley further stated:
“The American people do not want another endless war in the Middle East-yet what we’ve seen in recent days is a president willing to make significant military decisions bringing us closer to war without consulting Congress or recognizing that our Constitution gives war-making power to Congress, not the President.”
Paul also chimed in on the matter by saying, “It is time for Congress to stop using previous AUMFs as an excuse to continue abdicating its constitutional responsibility on war.”
