(NewsReady.com) – There are many claims on the Internet about “The Simpsons” writers predicting major events years in advance. For example, in 2000, the show’s writers predicted Donald Trump’s presidency (that is true). A recent rumor claimed it also predicted the former president’s assassination. The showrunner lashed out about that particular claim.
On July 13, Trump survived an attempt on his life. He was lucky to walk away with just an ear injury. Two others suffered critical injuries, and a third person died. The Internet quickly lit up with the claim that “The Simpsons” predicted Trump’s assassination. A photo circulated online showing the former POTUS in a coffin with the words “RIP Donald Trump, 1946–2024″.”
The problem is that the photo is completely fabricated. People have shared versions of it since 2017, the year Trump was sworn in as president. Other variations have had different text written on them, but all have been fake.
In an interview with TMZ, “The Simpsons” Executive Producer Matt Selman condemned the image. He said the meme was completely classless and was shocked that so many people thought it was real. Selman said people who think “The Simpsons” would include “horrifying content” like that on a family television show must not watch it or understand the cartoon at all.
Selman also spoke to Reuters and said the image was “doctored” and that “an image of Donald Trump in a coffin” has never been on the beloved show. He explained that it’s easy for people to spread fake predictions “for the purpose of misleading people.”
There are times when the show makes real predictions. In addition to the prediction that Trump’s presidency episode was one in which an underwater submersible had an emergency; the Titan underwater submersible imploded last year while it made a trip to the Titanic wreckage. In the second season of the show, Marge Simpson received a response from Ringo Starr, a member of The Beatles. Decades later, in 2013, two women received a response from another member of the band after sending him a mixtape 50 years earlier.
