(NewsReady.com) – President Biden has been stuck with the nickname “Sleepy Joe” since Donald Trump first used it in 2020, but it seems he’s not the only senior Democrat who has trouble staying awake. A left-leaning congressman has been photographed catching some quick Zs during a key committee meeting. It turns out this isn’t the first time he’s done it, either — and the incident is boosting calls for age or term limits on politicians.

On April 26, Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, attended a meeting to discuss the work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). This was an important event for Nadler, as it dealt with the Democrat anti-gun agenda that he’s played a big part in pushing, but it turned out that wasn’t enough to hold his attention. In fact, he couldn’t even stay awake; photos shared on social media clearly show him sleeping while he was supposed to be leading a meeting with the ATF director.
Falling asleep in an important meeting once might be excused, but Nadler makes a habit of it. In December 2019, while the Democrats were making their first attempt to impeach President Trump, Nadler had a snooze in a Judiciary Committee meeting. He did it again in October 2021, drawing criticism from GOP lawmakers. In 2022, during a Zoom meeting of Democrat committee chairs, Nadler was “Rock-a-Bye Baby” for half of the 15-minute conference. According to one Dem insider, Nadler falling asleep is nothing new — “It’s just a known thing,” he said — and everyone else carried on without him.
It’s amusing to poke fun at a politician who publicly falls asleep, but this highlights a real issue. Our 80-year-old president can’t remember visiting Ireland two weeks ago. One 89-year-old Senator, Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), is notoriously unfit to be in office. Congress is increasingly filled with ancient career politicians who have held seats for decades. After 75-year-old Nadler’s latest public nap, many people took to social media to demand age or term limits for our legislators. That might be an idea whose time has come.
