US May Increase Presence in Middle East

Increased threats from Iran over the course of 2019 may prompt the US to send an additional 14,000 troops to the Middle East. Iran ramped up aggression in the region in September with drone strikes and harassment of shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. A critical attack on the Iranian military’s cyber systems by the US in June crippled their ability to reliably attack shipping targets.

Were the US to respond, the presence of our ships and troops would double. A decision could come as early as December.

America’s presence has slowly increased in the region based on the recent escalation in tensions. In October, the US deployed additional missile defense batteries and additional troops to Saudi Arabia. In November, the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln patrolled through the Strait of Hormuz as a show of force and a demonstration that the waterways are safe for passage.
