One of the weekend’s biggest news stories was Representative Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) meeting with President Trump to discuss crossing the floor of the House and joining the Republican Party. Van Drew is one of 39 House Democrats representing a district that voted for President Trump, and while so far he’s the only one to change parties, it’s possible that others will refuse to vote for impeachment.
Van Drew’s decision certainly has its critics. At least five of his aides have resigned since his Saturday meeting with the president. In a joint letter to the congressman’s chief of staff they wrote:
“Sadly, Congressman Van Drew’s decision to join the ranks of the Republican Party led by Donald Trump does not align with the values we brought to this job when we joined his office.”
Meanwhile, Trump tweeted his support for Van Drew’s move. In a Sunday morning message he said “Wow, that would be big. Always heard Jeff is very smart!”
