A California mayor has pleaded guilty to operating as an illegal Chinese government agent while holding elected office, exposing how foreign adversaries have penetrated American local government to spread propaganda and advance Beijing’s interests on U.S. soil.

Story Snapshot

  • Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang admitted to acting as an unregistered Chinese agent, facing up to 10 years in federal prison
  • Wang and her former fiancé operated a fake news website that published Chinese government propaganda denying human rights abuses
  • The case reveals systematic Chinese Communist Party infiltration of local politics through ethnic community networks
  • Wang’s co-conspirators, including her campaign advisor, are already serving prison sentences for espionage activities

Chinese Agent Operated Fake News Website While Seeking Office

Eileen Wang, 58, agreed to plead guilty to one felony count of acting as an illegal foreign agent for the People’s Republic of China between 2020 and 2022. Wang and her former fiancé, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, created and operated a website called “US News Center” that masqueraded as a legitimate news source for the Chinese American community in Southern California. Instead, they received direct instructions through the WeChat messaging platform from Chinese government officials, who provided pre-written propaganda articles for publication. These articles denied documented human rights abuses in Xinjiang and promoted Chinese Communist Party narratives to American readers.

Campaign Advisor Conducted Surveillance for Beijing

Sun served as Wang’s campaign advisor when she successfully ran for the Arcadia City Council in November 2022, a detail that underscores how deeply foreign intelligence operations had embedded themselves in her political rise. In April 2023, Sun conducted surveillance on Taiwan’s president during a Southern California visit and reported his findings directly to Chinese officials. Sun pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal Chinese agent in October 2025 and received a 48-month federal prison sentence. His handler, John Chen, a Chinese intelligence operative with connections to President Xi Jinping, was separately sentenced to 20 months in prison by a New York federal court in November 2024.

Foreign Infiltration Reaches Elected Leadership

Wang won election as mayor of Arcadia approximately three months before prosecutors unsealed the criminal charges against her in May 2026. Arcadia, located in Los Angeles County’s San Gabriel Valley, has a population of roughly 56,000 residents, with approximately 45 percent of Asian descent, making it an attractive target for Chinese influence operations that exploit ethnic community ties. Wang resigned immediately after the plea agreement became public on May 11, 2026. Her attorneys stated she “recognizes the seriousness of her actions and accepts responsibility for past mistakes.” The case represents a rare instance of a sitting American mayor admitting to acting as a foreign agent.

Deep State Failure Allowed Years of Covert Operations

The Wang case exposes fundamental failures in protecting American democratic institutions from foreign subversion. For over two years, Chinese government officials directed propaganda operations through an elected official who would eventually become mayor of a California city, all while federal agencies failed to detect or stop the activity until after significant damage was done. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that authorities “will not allow hostile nations to infiltrate our political bodies,” yet Wang operated freely throughout her campaign and into her mayoral term. This represents exactly the kind of institutional incompetence that frustrates Americans across the political spectrum who wonder whether government agencies prioritize genuine national security or merely react after scandals become public.

Wang faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison when she formally enters her guilty plea in Los Angeles federal court. The Foreign Agents Registration Act requires anyone acting on behalf of foreign governments to register with the U.S. Department of Justice, a law designed to provide transparency about foreign influence activities. Wang’s failure to register while simultaneously holding elected office and publishing Chinese government propaganda represents a clear violation that undermines both the law and the trust Americans place in their local leaders. The case forms part of a broader pattern of Chinese Communist Party influence operations targeting diaspora communities, local media outlets, and political campaigns across the United States.
