Man Receives An 11-Month Prison Sentence For Threatening Pelosi And Mayorkas

(NewsReady.com) – There’s no doubt that America is incredibly divided. Politicians are fighting one another, using divisive language. Social media has also helped spread the divisions. The partisanship has led to some people losing their cool and saying things that should have remained in their own heads. One man is now going to prison for letting his emotions get the best of him.

On March 27, the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced Judge William Alsup sentenced David Allen Carrier to 11 months in prison. The 44-year-old previously pleaded guilty to making threats against federal officials. He will also serve three years of supervised release and is not allowed to have any contact with the public officials he threatened.

On January 21, 2021, the day after President Joe Biden’s inauguration, Carrier called then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) office and left a message threatening her. According to reports, he told her that he was going to assault her. Seventeen months after threatening Pelosi, Carrier called the Department of Homeland Security hotline and left a message threatening to assault Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

In both cases, Carrier acknowledged that he was attempting to interfere with their official duties.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp said the sentence shows that the FBI will investigate and hold accountable anyone who threatens government officials. “Violent threats targeting elected officials also threaten our democratic system,” he said.

US Attorney Ismail Ramsey issued a statement saying it’s important for all Americans to exercise their First Amendment rights to engage in political discourse, but threatening public officials isn’t a constitutionally protected right. He made it clear that his office wouldn’t tolerate that behavior.

Pelosi and Mayorkas are two of the most controversial government officials, The former speaker’s home was even broken into during her time in office, and her husband suffered severe head injuries from a man who wanted to find the congresswoman.
