Judge Says Trump Risks Jail Time for Disobeying the Gag Order

(NewsReady.com) – Former President Donald Trump will go on trial in New York over the hush money allegations in mid-April. The judge in the case already issued a gag order. A retired judge has now warned the former president that he is risking jail time by allegedly violating the order.

Retired California Superior Court Judge LaDoris Cordell spoke to CNN recently about the gag order on Trump in the New York hush-money case. The former president is facing charges over allegations of financial fraud regarding a 2016 payment to ex-adult film star Stephanie “Stormy Daniels” Clifford. The two allegedly had an affair with former First Lady Melania Trump, who was pregnant with their only child, Barron, and the 45th POTUS is accused of paying Clifford to keep quiet about it leading up to the 2016 presidential election.

On March 26, Judge Juan Merchan imposed a gag order on Trump after he made comments about him and his daughter, Loren Merchan. Cordell said she hoped the court would expand the gag order (it did) and that the judge would have one response—and that is to put him in jail.

Cordell said she believes there should be “an immediate consequence” for Trump when he ignores the court order and says whatever he’s thinking. She explained that jailing a defendant for ignoring a court order is the “normal response” because the legal system can’t be “subjected to these kinds of threats and intimidation.”

The retired judge pointed out that a defendant has never been able to just get away with ignoring a court order.

On April 1, Merchan expanded the gag order to limit Trump’s attacks on the judge’s family. In his ruling, he said that Trump’s “pattern of attacking family members of presiding jurists and attorneys” who are working on his cases has no real purpose, other than to instill fear in civil workers who were “assigned or called to participate” in the former president’s cases.
