Bernie Sanders Calls on Israel to Exercise Restraint When Striking Gaza

(NewsReady.com) – The Gaza Strip is approximately 141 square miles and is home to more than 2 million people. All of its borders, except for one, are controlled by Israel. When Hamas carried out a brutal and bloody attack on the Jewish state, there was concern that innocent people in Gaza would die. Even the Israeli government issued warnings to the residents. Now, a Jewish US senator is asking for restraint.

On October 11, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) issued a statement saying, “The gunning down of young Israelis” who were enjoying themselves at a music festival “is an image the world will not soon forget.” The lawmaker was referring to the mass murder of at least 260 young people on October 7. He went on to call the terrorist attack “a major setback” for Palestine and Israel.

Sanders went on to explain some of the horrendous conditions people in Gaza have lived in for years. He called the area an “open-air prison” where millions of people struggle for “basic necessities.” The senator said Hamas’ terrorist attack will continue “the cycle of violence.” However, he pointed out that targeting “civilians is a war crime, no matter who does it” and called Israel’s decision to block electricity, water, and food from reaching Gaza a “violation of international law.” He called on the Israeli government to show “restraint” and “work to secure UN humanitarian access.”

Hamas showed no restraint. The terrorist organization raided towns, murdering men, women, children, and babies. They are also reportedly hiding among innocent civilians in Gaza, creating a dangerous situation for their very own people. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters that Hamas is using people as “human shields.”

Israel has made it clear that it has no intention of showing restraint when it comes to eradicating Hamas. However, the government has repeatedly warned civilians to evacuate their homes and find safety elsewhere, doing what it can to mitigate the collateral damage. But Hamas has ordered them to stay, putting them in the line of fire — once again, showing the world they don’t believe in restraint.
